At the age of 7, Jonathan Hanson asked for a cello for Christmas. That year, Jonathan found a beautiful new cello waiting just for him... and he has been playing the instrument ever since!
Jonathan began his cello journey studying with Elizabeth Marsh. He later studied with the nationally renowned cellists Rainer Eudiekis and Matthew Johnson, both of whom served as principal cellists of the Utah Symphony. Jonathan is currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Performance from Brigham Young University, where he studies under the direction of Dr. Michelle Kesler.
As a former member of the Lyceum Philharmonic, Jonathan performed with artists such as David Archuleta, Gentry, and Caroline Campbell. More recently, with BYU Philharmonic, Jonathan has shared the stage with internationally renowned performers such as Itzhak Perlman.
In March of 2024, Jonathan performed as the cello soloist for Aspen Chorale’s production The Lamb of God, which he found to be a deeply rewarding experience. In addition to solo and orchestral opportunities, Jonathan enjoys performing live music with his string trio, Westbrothers.
Jonathan enjoys teaching cello lessons and is passionate about helping his students progress. His teaching philosophy targets the practice room, where his goal is to help each parent and student understand what practicing can look like each day. He puts a strong focus on proper technique as the foundation of a beautiful tone. Jonathan is a naturally happy and positive person, and enjoys working with students of all ages!
Jonathan teaches from his home studios in Alpine, Utah and Provo, Utah.
